Cattle producers are welcoming the possible restoration of market access to China.
Last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Agriculture Minister Gerry
Ritz and International Trade Minister Peter van Loan secured the
breakthrough agreement after meetings with a Chinese delegation that
included President Hu.
Canadian cattlemen's Association
President Travis Toews says they welcome the deal which aims to open
the Chinese border to Canadian beef and tallow. "It really means that
an important market for Canadian beef has been re opened", he says,
"granted this is going to be a staged process but this is really good
news for the Canadian cattle industry short term but both intermediate
and longer term".
He
says while the Chinese currently do not eat much beef per capita, it's
economy is growing, and demand for higher quality protein usually
increases along with income.
