Congratulations to the deserving recipients of the 2009 FunTeam Alberta Awards. On June 14th, 2010 FunTeam Alberta recognized Scott Dietrich and Chris Cochrane of Drumheller, Alberta for their outstanding dedication to FunTeam’s vision and principles.

The SportChek Outstanding Participant Award was developed as a means to recognize a FunTeam participant who has displayed sportsmanship, cooperation and is a role model to their peers.

Scott Dietrich, 18 years old, has been a member of Drumheller FunTeam since 1999. He is currently a member of the Drumheller RecTeam and has remained a dedicated member for the last 11 seasons. He has proven to be a role model both on and off the ice. Scott is a former member of the Drumheller Navy League and Sea Cadets, volunteers at the Annual Legion Poppy Drive & Salvation Army Christmas Kettle, and participates annually in both the MS Walk and the Terry Fox Run. He also volunteered at Saint Anthony School throughout his junior and senior high school years, helping with fundraising and sporting events.

On the ice Scott is encouraging to his team mates and respectful to his coaches, officials and the opposing teams. He is a true team player, always including younger and lesser skilled players and doing his best to help them succeed. This season he volunteered his time to help coach our rookie program and has been a great addition.

In 2007, Scott was presented the Adolf Metzger Memorial Sportsman Citizenship Award, acknowledging him as an excellent role model for sportsmanship and his volunteer work in refereeing Junior FunTeam Drumheller hockey. He has also earned the Esso Medal of Achievement for the Most Sportsmanlike Player in 2006 and the Most Dedicated Player in 2008.

The Randy Gregg Volunteer Award, named after our President and founder, recognizes a volunteer who has displayed leadership, sportsmanship, and dedication to supporting youth in their community.

In 2006 as a new resident to Drumheller, Chris Cochrane wanted to make a difference in his new community and chose to volunteer with the Drumheller FunTeam Hockey Club. He has been a knowledgeable asset to the RecTeam Hockey Program. He has brought with him not only excellent hockey skills, but a special ability to encourage each player to strive for their best while always maintaining sportsmanlike conduct. He has been a true leader in sportsmanship and good citizenship.

Chris has proved to be an excellent role model for the teenaged players and has gained the respect of parents and coaches alike. In the 2008/2009 season, Chris continued to dedicate his time coaching the varsity and intermediate RecTeam every Sunday night. Whenever the team had extra games on Saturdays, Chris was sure to be there as well as offer rides to those whose parents were unable to attend. Given all that he’s done, it was a unanimous decision to award Chris Cochrane with The 2009 Randy Gregg Volunteer Award. Chris has made a lifetime impression on many players and parents, and has instilled in them the values of cooperation and fun. He has made an immeasurable contribution not only to the program but to the youth, adults, coaches and volunteers.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of a non-profit organization and Scott and Chris went above and beyond what was expected of them to uphold FunTeam Alberta’s vision. We consider ourselves very lucky to have such extraordinary role models for FunTeam Alberta and the Drumheller community in general. Thank you Scott and Chris, for your hard work, inspiration, dedication and incredible leadership!
