After six days of competition, the 2010 Alberta Summer Games came to an end on Sunday. Athletes, their family and friends, coaches, officials, VIPs, visitors and fans joined together in a celebration of sport and spirit at the Closing Ceremonies.

With the exception of a medal game yesterday, 47 medals were at stake Sunday. Football proved to be a popular throughout the tournament with Zone 6 (Edmonton) playing Zone 3 (Calgary) for the Gold medal. The final score was 11-0 for Calgary. Zone 1 was awarded Bronze Saturday evening.

Girls and Boys Softball was another favorite venue which was fully embraced by the residents of Manning. In the Girls Softball event, the Gold medal was awarded to Zone 5 after winning their game against the silver medalists Zone 7. The Bronze medal was awarded to Zone 4. Zone 7 took Gold in the Boys Softball event after beating Zone 5 (silver medal); while Bronze was awarded to Zone 8.

In both events of Girls and Boys Soccer, the final match was between Zones 5 and 6. The Girls Zone 6 won Gold while the Boys Zone 5 won Gold. Zones 3, 5 and 6 all made it to the medal standings of the Basketball tournament.

Final results of the Female Basketball tournament were Zone 5 taking Gold, Zone 3 Silver and Zone 6 Bronze. In the Male Basketball tournament, Zone 3 took home the
Gold, Silver going to Zone 6 and Bronze to Zone 5.

A total of 574 medals were awarded during the Games. Zone 5 won the most Gold medals with a total of 44, followed by Zone 3 (39 Gold medals). Zone 3 took home the most medals overall with a total of 108.

At the Closing Ceremonies, Zone 5 was awarded the Alberta Cup, which is awarded to the zone achieving the most medal points. The Minister’s Cup, which is awarded to the zone showing the greatest improvement from the last Alberta Summer Games, was awarded to Zone 2. Finally, the Spirit of Sport Award went to Zone 8 who demonstrated fair play, sportsmanship, team spirit and cooperation both on and off the field.
