If you have been near the former CN Rail Train Bridge in Midland, you would probably have noticed that there is now planking on the former rail bridge.
This bridge, which will be known as Kohut Crossing, will be and is a big part of the Rails To Trails project. With the progress, the new trail continues to move forward and it won’t be long before there will be a second connection across the Red Deer River. Councillor Crystal Sereda shares what items remain to allow the Town to open Kohut Crossing to walking and riding traffic. “The decking is in place to make the area safe for all the pedestrians. Now we need to install a chain link fence, not only to define the walking area, but to keep individuals off the structure of the bridge. We are hoping that fence will be completed by the end of September of this year, and the walking path will be open to users.” They also remind residents that the bridge will only be usable to non-motorized vehicles like pedal bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters, and pedestrians.
The remainder of the trail within the core of Drumheller is being completed as well, including the paved portion between 5th Street East and 2nd Street West. Sereda notes that crews are working around a number of other projects. “There are some breaks in (the trail) because of things happening in our community with water lines, gas lines, all kinds of infrastructure is happening. The work continues and hopefully that will be completed by the end of August. A huge thank you to Gallagher’s Trucking for their generous donation to the Rails To Trails. They’ve been working towards completing this leg of the trail and we are grateful for their contribution to this community.” With the crushed concrete that will be placed along the trail from 2 Street West to the Midland Train Bridge, the trail will be completely usable from the Train Bridge to Rosedale by the end of August and hopefully from the north side of the river, across “Kohut Crossing” to Rosedale by the end of September.
