Both the Drumheller Dragons and Camrose Kodiaks were reeling as the two teams headed into their matchup on Sunday afternoon in Camrose. The Dragons were coming off a tough loss on Saturday in Lloydminster, the Kodiaks coming off a loss to the Olds Grizzlys at home on Saturday night.
Going into the game, the Kodiaks were four points up on the Dragons in the standings, in third place. Drumheller was hoping to narrow the gap. Former Kodiak, Bradley Gallo would open the scoring for the Dragons with his 33rd of the year, unassisted at 1:03 of the first period. The Kodiaks would even the score with an unassisted goal of their own at 4:10, scored by Garrett Thom. The Kodiaks would take the lead at 11:33 with Dylan Bidyk scoring his fifth of the year. Drumheller would tie the game at 2-2 when Brec Christenson scored a pretty one on a backhand assisted by Hudson Gainer at 16:33. The scoring in the first period wasn’t finished as Easton Daneault would score his 19th of the year with 1:39 left, unassisted.
Drumheller would hold on to the 3-2 lead through the second as both teams would have their chances but both goaltenders would hold their ground.
In the third, the Kodiaks would have a great opportunity to tie the game but Dragons netminder Matthew Kondro make one of the best saves of the year stopping a cross ice chance by Tyson Murray. The Dragons would add to their lead at 7:24 when Allen Sherpa scored his 11th of the year from Jase Johnstone. Frustration was starting to set in for the Camrose Kodiaks and Dylan Bidyk would start a fight with Allen Sherpa, but Sherpa didn’t drop his gloves. Bidyk would get the only penalty, a five-minute major for fighting, with just under five to go in the game, essentially ending the comeback hopes for Camrose. Allen Sherpa would add salt to the wound, scoring an empty net goal from Cameron Johnsen to end the game with 5-2 Dragons victory.
