With the announcement of the resignation of MP-Elect Damien Kurek for the Battle River-Crowfoot constituency to offer the opportunity for Conservative Leader Pierre Pollievre to run in a by-election to gain a seat in the House of Commons, we reached out to local mayors on their view on the announcement.
Mayor of Drumheller Heather Colberg has nothing but admiration for Kurek for stepping aside for Pollievre. “My first reaction is that we are so blessed to have Damien and he is just an incredible representative for us. He is also an incredible, stand up guy. He is all about the best thing for Canada and the government. If he feels this is the right move, and we are fortunate enough to have Pierre represent our area, then it is a win win for everyone. I can’t thank Damien enough for putting Canada first.”
With having the potential of the leader of a party as our representative in the House of Commons, is only more of a benefit for our region believes Colberg. “I’m a big believer that our representative, and Pierre being the leader, is going to be a bonus for our area. The fact that he was an Alberta boy at one point, so he understands rural Alberta. I think that is really going to help us.”
Mayor of Stettler Sean Nolls has the same sentiments when it comes to Kurek stepping down. “Damien will be missed. He has been a big part of our community and he has been really good for the town of Stettler. His political acumen, I don’t know if you can replace that. Having Pierre Pollievre running in our riding, is a bit of an honour to have someone with that type of background to be here to help us. To be part of our town and part of our region, I think that is something to get excited about. Even if we miss Damien, and we are going to miss Damien, it is an exciting time for us.”
The timeline for the by-election has not been confirmed but the hope is that it will be soon.
