The Town of Drumheller, along with the Province of Alberta and the Government of Canada, continue work on the flood mitigation of the Red Deer and Rosebud Rivers in 2025.
Those that drive along Highway 10, or along the river in Nacmine, most likely have noticed that construction continues on new berms in those parts of Drumheller. According to the Project Director of Flood Mitigation, Deighen Blakely, work has commenced on the final berms of the project. “We are excited to be working on the final two big berms for the town. One of them, being in Nacmine protecting that community. The other is in Rosedale. There are two components to that one.” The first component is expanding the current west side berm between Highway 10 and the former CN Rail bridge over the Rosebud River. The second will be on the east side of the Rosebud River and then wrapping along the Red Deer River.
Blakely acknowledges that the work on the berm along the west side of the Rosebud River, will fortify the riverbank. “A big component is to protect the bank from eroding. We have some bio-engineering with rip rap and some planting to hold the bank up, so it doesn’t move during a flood event.”
Blakely confirms that crews are working daily on the berm projects, including evenings and weekends, and the hope is to have these final berms in place by the fall of 2025.
