The Victoria Day Long Weekend in the Drumheller Valley did not have the greatest of weather but that did not deter the participants and visitors for the Chainsaw Wizards Power and Precision event.
It took place between the Memorial Arena and Badlands Community Facility. Tony Miglecz from the Chainsaw Wizards was quite pleased how the event went. “We have a lot more participation from the community. It was actually quite amazing how many people are into chainsaw carving. There were people that came from Slave Lake. Manitoba, they brought their tools. They knew the international carvers were coming and wouldn’t have their tools to use. It is turning into such a great event. It’s amazing what these people can do. Everybody that came down there, loved it.” The event had carvers from many parts of Canada, United States, Wales, and Germany.
The event also provided the spectators a number of opportunities to take a small carving home with a quick carve auction on three of the days. Many that were bidding were from the Drumheller Valley and Miglecz believes that it is great that some of the pieces will stay in the valley. “We couldn’t do anything about the taking (of the trees) down but we really want their downfall worthwhile in someway. I think this is a great way to remember our trees, honour our trees. We all have a piece of the valley when we have these carvings and have a connection with the carvers that were actually (creating the art).”
Each carver that participated created a main piece that is currently on auction. Miglecz is hopeful with the auction so that their team can continue with the event, as the auction proceeds go towards the event next year. “The pieces that are on auction right now, we’re using that money to finance next year’s event. We are trying to make (the event) self-sustaining. If you can afford to bid on the carvings, bid often. Let’s try and make this event great by continuing to support it.”
The live auction wraps up on Friday, May 23rd at 6 PM. You can bid by visiting the Auction Website.
