You couldn’t have asked for a better day on Saturday for a car show.
Downtown Drumheller was filled with a vast amount of classic cars and trucks with the annual Boogie In The Badlands put on by the Valley Cruisers. Overall it looks like the event was a remarkable success according to Doug Lubinski from the Valley Cruisers. “Our registration was way up this year. The amazing weather on Saturday, and we have a very strong social media push, brought us to that number just shy of 300 amazing vehicles. We tried to put things at the end of every street to draw people down, and we put up street signs in the middle to tell people what was down that street.” With that number of vehicles, two and half blocks of 3rd Avenue, two blocks of Centre Street, and one and a half blocks of 1st Street West were full of cars and trucks.
There are so many highlights to the show but one must admit that the variety of vehicles on display is impressive. Lubinski admits that it is all about the love of the vehicles. “Everybody is proud of their car, no matter what it is, if it is a brand new car, whatever. We let everybody come into the show. Whatever you have to show, there is always somebody that is interested in that vehicle.”
Also involved in the show were a number of different events, like music at the Plaza, the True North Pin-up Girls with photo opportunities with the vehicles, and food trucks. The growth of the show is something that Lubinski and their group are going to have to focus on before next year. “We’re running out of space downtown. We have to keep certain areas open for emergency vehicles and have always said that for the amount of space we have right now, 300 is our max. We were very, very close to maxing out.” The group plans on discussing with the Town of Drumheller on other streets they may be able to use so they do not have to limit the number of vehicles that hope to attend next year.
The event was a three day event, with a drive over the 11 Bridges to Wayne on Friday night and a cruise to East Coulee for the pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. Lubinski shared that they had about 50 vehicles participate in both Friday and Sunday. He also thanks all the sponsors and volunteers involved in the event which are key for the success this year and moving forward.
