An annual week to recognize and appreciate seniors in our community and province is once again upon us.
Seniors Week is June 2nd to June 8th. To start off the week, a complimentary pancake breakfast was held at the Pioneer Trail Centre on Monday morning. Karen Schneck, Senior Services Coordinator for the Town of Drumheller shares that the pancake breakfast is a great way to start off the week. “Every year it’s been kind of a tradition to have a pancake breakfast to kick off Seniors Week and it is our way of giving back to the seniors that have contributed so much in the community. All the volunteers want to come help and be part of this. It is a growing breakfast as time goes on.”
There are a number of events taking place throughout the week according to Schneck. “This week the (Royal) Tyrrell Museum is having a hike Tuesday and Thursday afternoon 1:15 PM to 2 PM, a guided walk through the hills. It is a $5 charge. After that, there is fossil casting, for a $5 charge. That is Tuesday and Thursday from 2 PM to 5:30 PM. It is free admission (for seniors) to the museum this week. Also Sunshine Lodge is having an open house on Friday afternoon.”
The importance of recognizing our seniors is not lost on Schneck. “Seniors are a big part of Drumheller. They volunteer and our volunteer appreciation had a lot of our seniors coming. They are knowledgeable in many things and are a great resource for our community.”
