Earlier this week, on Monday, an event took place looking for input about upcoming changes to the electoral boundaries for provincial constituencies in our province.
The Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission came to the Cretaceous Conference Centre to provide an opportunity for area residents to provide their input on the upcoming changes to constituencies, including the Drumheller-Stettler riding for the next provincial election. With the increase in Alberta’s population, the government has decided that two new seats in Alberta’s Legislature will be adding, bring the total from 87 currently, to 89.
According to Christina Steenbergen from the Province of Alberta, the Commission is visiting 16 communities across the province throughout the spring. They started on May 29th and will finish on June 20th. The committee will also host a virtual meeting on June 23rd. At this time, the committee is gathering public feedback and will start deliberations in the last week of June. An interim report will be tabled later this fall and the Commission will host more public meetings in early 2026, with dates and locations to be announced.
In our area, the Drumheller-Stettler constituency is one of the larger ones in the province when it comes to land area but in population, we are currently 25 percent below the median average of just over 56,000 people, at nearly 42,000. There may need to be adjustments to the Drumheller-Stettler constituency to add more population, and to add the two new constituencies in the province. The Commission consists of Greg Clark, Dr. Julian Martin, Hon. Justice Dallas Miller, Susan Samson, and John Evans.
