It has been years and years since there has been rodeo action at the Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society grounds but that will change this upcoming weekend.
Rugged Rodeo has partnered with the Drumheller Lions Club the Morrin Lions Club and Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society to bring rodeo back to the Stampede Grounds on June 20th and 21st. According to Al Bouchard from Rugged Rodeo, it just makes sense to have rodeo back in Drumheller. “I used to compete in Drumheller quite a few years back, when they used to have an event. I always thought it was a really good event and a good venue. We really put a lot of emphasis on starting up events that had failed once upon a time, and bringing them back. Drumheller hadn’t had an event for quite a few years so it made the list of places we were looking to expand to.”
The event lineup is pretty much the same as a typical rodeo, with a few differences. “We have all the major events,” shares Bouchard. “We have all the major events. One big difference with our rodeos is that they are an open event. Anybody can come enter them. You can have Canadian Champions come enter it or you can have a local guy that wants to compete at his local rodeo, he can enter it. They don’t have to buy a membership to enter our rodeos, they just have to put their name down.” Rugged Rodeo brings everything from the chutes to the rodeo stock for the event. The show is expected to be about a two and a half our performance.
The entry for the show is $20 per day with performances starting at 7 PM on both Friday, June 20th and Saturday, June 21st. They also offer free camping (without services) to those interested in staying the weekend. They are also having a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning with Drumheller A & W. There will also be a silent auction to fundraise for the Lions clubs and Stampede and Ag Society. As well there will be a beer garden on site.
