As announced this morning by Prime Minister Mark Carney, the Battle River-Crowfoot riding will be heading to a by-election.
The date for the by-election is August 18th. The by-election was called due to the resignation of MP Damien Kurek to allow the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Pierre Poilievre to run in the constituency to attempt to regain a seat the House of Commons.
So far, there have been four people to officially put their names forward. Of course, Pierre Poilievre for the Conservative Party of Canada. Jonathan Bridges, who ran in the election against Damien Kurek, has again thrown his hat in the ring for the People’s Party of Canada. Sarah Spanier is running as an independent. Also, Bonnie Critchley has put her name forward, also running as an independent. Finally, there could be upwards of 200 people on the ballot as the Longest Ballot Committee is aiming to have up to 200 names on the ballot. They had 85 on the ballot in the Carleton riding, where Pierre Poilievre ran in the federal election earlier this spring.
In a statement released on social media, Conservative candidate Pierre Poilievre shared that he plans to follow in the footsteps of former MP Damien Kurek. “It would be an honour to represent the people of Battle River-Crowfoot on the floor of the House of Commons as their Member of Parliament. I will follow in the footsteps of outgoing MP Damien Kurek and fight for oil and gas, free enterprise, a strong defense and respect for the West.”
Poilievre continues to comment that he understands the importance of the Battle River-Crowfoot constituency in Canada. “The farmers, energy workers, and soldiers of Battle River-Crowfoot feed, power, and protect Canada. I will work hard and with humility to earn the support of the great people in this extraordinary region.”
