In the early morning hours of Monday, June 30th, Drumheller Fire and Rescue crews were called to a structure fire at the corner of 2nd Street SW and 5th Avenue SW.
The call came in at just before 6 AM with a garage on the backside of 499 2nd Street SW completely engulfed in flames. Drumheller Fire responded and were able to extinguish the fire quickly. The garage structure was destroyed in the fire.
According to Fire Chief Derian Rosario, this was not the only call for the Fire Department this morning. “We have had a busy morning. It started at 12:30 AM and kind of kept going for the next six hours, so we have been quite busy for the last little bit.”
As for this fire, Rosario shares that it was quite involved once crews arrived. “It was a detached garage, behind the home. On arrival, the fire was already out through the roof of the structure. It was well involved and well embedder. The guys did a great job. We got a quick knock down on it and it took a little bit to get everything out, due to the contents of the garage. The fire was extinguished in pretty short order.”
As for other adjacent buildings, Rosario notes that no damage was noticed. “There was another detached garage across the back alley. It was not impinged but the radiant heat was starting to get to it. It didn’t get damaged and the guys got it cooled down and no damage was done to that structure.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. “I don’t have any idea what was the cause of the fire at this time,” admits Rosario. “We will be investigating it throughout the day and hopefully come to some resolution.”
