As of 9 AM on Friday. August 8th, the advanced polls for the by-election for the Battle River-Crowfoot riding are now open.
In Drumheller and for many of the smaller communities around the Drumheller Valley, the advanced polls are at the Cretaceous Conference Centre, next to Tim Hortons on Highway 9 South. We stopped by this morning and there were quite a few already in line to vote.
Elections Canada has a special ballot for this election as there are 214 people on the ballot. So instead of marking an “X” beside the person you wish to vote for, you will be provided a ballot that you must write in the candidate you are voting for. They have provided a list of candidates so that you can spell the name correctly, although if a name is misspelled, as long as the ballot counter can surmise who you have voted for, the ballot will be counted.
To vote, you should have received a voter card in your mail, please bring that with you with a piece of identification. If you do not have your voter card, as long as you have identification and a proof of your current physical address, like a power bill or property tax bill, you also will be allowed to vote. Finally, you can still vote if you declare your identity and address in writing and have someone who knows you and who is assigned to your polling station vouch for you.
The voucher must be able to prove their identity and address. A person can vouch for only one person.
The advanced polls are open Friday, August 8th, Saturday, August 9th, Sunday, August 10th, and Monday, August 11th from 9 AM to 9 PM each day. Election day is Monday, August 18th.
