If you are one that attends the Canada Day Parade, at the start of the parade is the fire trucks and crew from Drumheller Fire and Rescue.
They are usually pushing their carts and carrying their boots to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy. This is an initiative that is not only done by Drumheller Fire and Rescue but has been a fundraiser for a number of fire departments across the country. The totals are in from Drumheller this year and our community was able to raise $5,100 for the cause. According to Fraser Hall, Manager Community Fundraising for Muscular Dystrophy Canada, Drumheller has been involved in this fundraiser for decades. “Forty-eight years all together, but starting in 1971.” There were a couple of years (COVID) where Drumheller unfortunately couldn’t participate.
Over the forty-eight years of contributions, Drumheller and area residents have supported financially to the tune of $116,000. This year’s total of $5,100 was one of the biggest one year total that the fire department has raised. Drumheller Fire Chief Derian Rosario shares that they love fundraising during the Canada Day Parade. “We don’t just get to show off our cool equipment, we get to have the community rally and support us to collect this money for Muscular Dystrophy. It is a tremendous cause and we are very happy to be a part of it.”
During this year’s parade, Rosario notes that they received some significant donations. “It kind of blew us away when we went to start do our tabulations. There was a hundred dollar bill and a couple of fifties from the community. One lady came forward and gave us her big jar of change. The community support is just incredible.”
