As the kids prepare for another school year it is important that they start off on the right “foot”.
The congregation of Grace Lutheran Church feel the same way and help with their Shoes For School program. Lynn Hemming has spearheaded the project for the church for over a decade. “I believe this is our 11th year of the church providing shoes for kids in Drumheller and area. We don’t ask any questions. It cost a lot of money to go back to school. School supplies, clothes, and school fees, are very expensive. For any family that is struggling, they just call us and we meet them and their kids so that they can pick out the shoes. That’s important to us that the kids can get the shoes that they want.”
Hemming and her group understand the importance for kids to be able to fit in on their first day of school. “It’s important for kids to fit in. In addition to having good footwear, which is important for growing kids, it is important for kids not to be singled out because, maybe, their family is struggling a little bit.”
This program is mainly funded by the parishioners of Grace Lutheran Church and Hemming is appreciative of the continued support. “We’re not a large church but people give very generously to this program. Every single year we’ve ended up with a few more dollars than what we actually needed for shoes. We have also have had some friends in the community that step up and give us some money towards this. It is very much appreciated.”
They run the program for the week before school, which is this week. If you are in need for your kids, reach out to Lynn Hemming at 403-820-4441. Over the years they’ve been able to help out hundreds of local kids with brand new shoes.
