Your Drumheller Dragons have started of their exhibition season over this past weekend.
It all started on Friday night for a rare battle against the Kindersley Klippers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. The first period was a defensive battle with both teams trying to feel each other out. Drumheller would tally the only goal of the first period with Jeremy Kraft scoring for the Dragons, unassisted and on the power play, with 1:31 left in the period. Drumheller took the 1-0 lead into the second period.
Drumheller came out with a bit more intensity in the second period, scoring early to increase their lead. Forward Michiel Leenders scored 1:29 in, from Wyatt Yule and Carter Ellsworth. The Dragons made it 3-0 at 3:00 with Nathan Hawkins scoring, from Ilija Majkic and Colter Playfair. Drumheller would get one more before the end of the period as Carter Ellsworth would get his second point of the game on a goal with 16.6 seconds remaining. Assisting on the goal were Michiel Leenders and Wyatt Yule. Kindersley was limited to four shots in the second and the Dragons would take the 3-0 lead into the third.
No scoring in the third and the Dragons would take the 4-0 victory. Brendan Williams, Drumheller born goaltender, would get the shut-out facing 17 shots in the game.
Saturday, the Dragons would hit the road for a matchup against the Camrose Kodiaks in Forestburg. Camrose came out flying scoring 3:22 in with a goal by Hunter Yee. Then two quick goals with less than five minutes left in the period, one with 4:18 remaining by Kieran Osberg, and then 10 seconds later by Josh Johnstone. Drumheller would score their only goal of the game with 2:35 left in the first period with Lauchlan Kozicky scoring from Trace Anderson and Allen Sherpa, making it 3-1 Kodiaks. Camrose would add one more before the end of the first, with Hubert Larose making it 4-1 Camrose.
The Kodiaks would score two more, one in the second at 3:46 by Evan Carver, then one in the third 45 seconds in by Jack Coughlin, making the final 6-1 Camrose.
The Dragons are back in action for a home and home series with the Calgary Canucks. Friday night the game is at the Memorial Arena at 7 PM. Saturday, the two teams will battle in Calgary at 5 PM.
