You may have seen or heard about the petition circulating around the province about wanting to have Alberta remain in Canada.
Former Deputy Premier Thomas Lukaszuk has created the Forever Canadian petition, which aims to make it official policy for Alberta to stay in Canada. The petition has been out for about a month and they have had a couple sessions for locals to sign and now a group of Drumheller residents have regular opportunities for Albertans to sign the petition. Curtis LaPierre is one of the locals working with the Forever Canadian movement and shares that quite a few have signed at the four sessions they’ve had in Drumheller, so far. “When we are down at the Splash Park, it is everybody from out of town, which has been really good. Locals right now, there haven’t been a lot and we sure would like to see a lot more. We don’t want to go door-to-door. We will set up and if people are comfortable coming to us.”
The need across the province is for 300,000 people to sign the petition before the end of October. There is also another petition that is currently tied up in the courts asking the opposing question and since the question will be submitted after the legislation changed, so they will only need 177,000 signatures. “I just got tired of seeing it on the news in Calgary that you can sign here, and sign here. I didn’t want to drive to Calgary to sign so we applied as canvassers,” comments Lapierre.
According to LaPierre, they have had minimal push back and have had a number of people thank them. “(People have been) thanking us for setting up the table and doing this work, greatly appreciated.”
This week, due to personal circumstances, they will not be set up but next week they will set up on Thursday (September 25th) at Munchie Park from 4 PM to 6 PM and Saturday (September 27th) at the Rotary Spray Park from 1 PM to 4 PM. Look for their blue tent with a Canadian flag at both locations to sign. LaPierre shares that they will continue to set up until the end of October as long as the weather holds out.
