It has been tradition for decades that the first poppy given out during the Royal Canadian Legion poppy campaign is given to the highest ranking local politician in the community.
That would be new Mayor Tony Miglecz and there was a ceremony held on the morning of October 31st at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 22 in Drumheller.
Legion President Ron Evans had the honor of placing the first poppy on the collar of Mayor Miglecz. This ceremony signifies the start of the annual poppy campaign in our community as volunteers with the Legion distributed poppy boxes throughout Drumheller starting on October 31st. All of the funds collected in the poppy boxes stays right here in our community supporting veterans as well as the local Sea Cadets. There are a number of rules on how the funds raised can be utilized.
The Poppy Campaign has begun so all are encouraged to stop by many local businesses in the Drumheller Valley, make a donation, and grab a poppy. The campaign runs from now until November 11th.
