A recreation facility that many of us have used in our lifetime is celebrating a significant milestone this week.
The Drumheller Aquaplex opened 50 years ago and continues to serve the community on a daily basis. Andrea Leavitt, Manager of the Aquaplex shares that although it is a milestone for the Aquaplex, swimming has been going on for longer than that in the Drumheller Valley. “Swimming in the Drumheller Valley actually started back in 1928 with the first pool that was built. Then, we graduated to the outdoor pool, that we currently have, and then in 1975 they added on the indoor pool so we could have swimming all year round.”
The celebration of the 50th birthday will take place this week, confirms Leavitt. “On Friday, December 5th, we are going to have our party, which will be from 6 to 8 PM with free public swimming. We will have some game, some nostalgia. We have found a lot of old pictures that we would love for people to identify who and what was going on. We will have cake at 7, not in the swimming pool, and then on Saturday the party is going to continue. We have another free public swim on Saturday, December 6th from 1 to 4 PM.”
After the celebration, unfortunately the Aquaplex will be having to close for a few days to finish the deck. “When they replaced all the piping for the hot tub, they had to dig up a significant portion of the deck,” shares Leavitt. “People have seen all the fencing up for quite a while now. They have to redo the deck so it looks similar to the same style of surface we have throughout the facility. Due to the nature of the product, we cannot have public in the facility.” The pool is scheduled to be closed between December 12th and 15th.
