Late last month, the Province of Alberta made a presentation to the Kneehill County Council on the viability review of the Village of Carbon.
Prior to this past municipal election, the process of the viability of the Village of Carbon began with a petition being submitted to Municipal Affairs with the Province back in July 2025. During the presentation to Kneehill County, things moved forward but more behind the scenes. The next step in the process will be a Public Information Session which is planned to be held in January 2026, although the date of the session has not yet been confirmed. The next step will be an online survey that will be available to village residents, as well as Kneehill County residents.
After the initial information session and survey, another public information session would take place to review what had been learned from the initial session and survey. Then a third public session would be held before a vote by Carbon residents on if they would like Carbon to remain a village, or dissolve and become a hamlet within Kneehill County.
If residents of the Village of Carbon vote to remain a village, Municipal Affairs may issue guidelines that the Village must administer to, to remain viable. A number of communities in our region have recently gone through this process, including Delia back in April of 2025, where residents voted to remain a village.
Depending on the vote later in 2026, if Carbon was to dissolve into Kneehill County, it would happen as of January 1, 2027.
Drumheller Online will keep an eye on the story and update when more information becomes available.
