The Alberta Chief Electoral Officer, Gordon McClure, has received two more petitions to recall a couple of current MLA’s.
MLA Mickey Amery from Calgary-Cross, and MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk from Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville have both have recall petitions as of December 8th. The requirement for both petitions to move forward is to have 60 percent of the voters who voted in the previous Provincial Election sign the petition. For the Calgary-Cross constituency that would require 9.083 signatures and for the Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville constituency, 14,688 signatures would be required.
There are currently 23 recall petitions on Elections Alberta’s website including Premier Danielle Smith in the Brooks-Medicine Hat riding, and a number of her ministers, including Demetrios Nicolaides, R J Sigurdson, and Adriana LaGrange. The petitioners have 90 days to attain the required signatures on said petitions.
If the recall petition is successful, the petition will be verified with Elections Alberta. If verified, the Lieutenant Governor in Council will order a recall vote to be conducted within 4 months of the date on which the successful petition results are published.
The question to be submitted to the electorate is whether the named member should be recalled.
A recall vote is successful if more than 50% of the electors who voted are in favour of the recall. If successful, the MLA is recalled and no longer an MLA, and a by-election is held in the electoral division.
