The Drumheller RCMP have been waiting for a new commander of the detachment since the departure of Staff Sgt. Rob Harms earlier this year.
About three weeks ago, the RCMP posted the new Staff Sgt. as the commander for our local detachment, Staff Sgt. Christian (Chris) Lafleur. Lafleur shares on how he decided that Drumheller was the place he wanted to be. “I drove here a couple of times before, as a tourist, and really liked it. I welcomed the opportunity to get the job here.”
Staff Sgt. Lafleur was previously posted in Fort MacLeod which has some similarities and differences compared to the Drumheller detachment. Lafleur is quite happy with the team here in Drumheller. “A very good team and very dedicated. They are what I call ‘diggers’. They’ll go out and look for things to basically do our job.” Essentially they are looking for trouble.
As this is his third week in the post, Lafleur is getting the “lay of the land” so to speak. “We discussed a few problem areas. This would be my third week. The first week was basically just moving in. I’m slowly getting to know the place, and getting to know the players, for lack of better terms.”
A different aspect of this posting is the interaction with the Drumheller Institution as the RCMP. “It does bring some changes to what I’m used to. I usually just bring people there, but I have never had to deal with people that are already there. We have had a couple of incidents since I’ve been here. The nice thing is that the guards will deal with a lot of the things that are happening there, and we do the follow up investigations.”
