It is hard to believe but the Drumheller and District Humane Society has been in the valley for 18 years.
The organization started in January 2008 and this past Sunday (January 25), celebrated their 18th year with an open house at their facility in the Premier Industrial Park. Board Chair Lindsay Rothman was pleased with the number of people that stopped in on Sunday afternoon. “We are really excited. We had an incredible turnout and we just wanted to say a huge thank you to everybody who came out.”
There continues to be animals surrendered to the humane society but Rothman notes that they have seen an uptick in adoptions. “Word just continues to get out about the work that we do. We launched our dog program on November 1st and have adopted out six dogs already. It has been just amazing. For our party yesterday, our ‘pink room’ was empty because over the last two days, we had adopted the cats that were in that room.”
Rothman and the whole organization appreciate the support from the community that has helped the Humane Society flourish but notes that all help is welcomed. “The community has been so good to us. We couldn’t have made it these 18 years without Drumheller and all of the people that are so generous. We don’t receive any funding so it is donations from the community that keeps this work happening. Volunteering is also a great way to get involved.” They have a need for “cat cuddlers” and “dog walkers” all the time.
