If you have been driving along Highway 9 / 56 north of Drumheller you may have noticed activity at the Hut 8 Bitcoin mining facility just outside of Drumheller.
There are a number of workers on site of the former bitcoin facility as well as a gigantic pile of rubble along Township Road 294. It does look like the site is being decommissioned, but there is also word that they are in the midst of renovations and bringing the site back online.
The site was closed back in March of 2024 and the employees were moved to the company’s mining site in Medicine Hat. The company had maintained its lease on the site and for the past two years the site has sat relatively stagnant.
When the closure happened back in 2024, Hut 8 shared that they did plan to move some of the mining materials to their Medicine Hat location. A search of Hut 8’s website still has the Drumheller location listed but it shares that it is currently non-operational.
We have reached out to Hut 8 Corp. to clarify what activity is taking place at their Drumheller facility but have not yet heard back from the company. When we do, we will update the information.
