As we start winding down the skating season in hockey, ringette, and figure skating, the Hanna Figure Skating Club has a fun event this Saturday to celebrate a number of skaters in our area.
It is called the Hanna Frost & Sparkle Fun Skate and Joanne Hoar from the Hanna Figure Skating Club shares the details of the event. “We are part of Skate Canada. Skate Canada has these sanctioned events for kids that are learning CanSkate and StarSkate. We have these tournaments where regional clubs can get together participate in an event that is not really competitive but (participants) are judged on their demonstrations of skating skills.” Those in the CanSkate program are learning to skate and can be kids in hockey, ringette, or starting figure skating. Those in StarSkate are beginning their figure skating journey by learning their skills.
The participants are up for medals in each category according to Hoar. “We will celebrate their growth. There are bronze, silver, and gold in each category. The can all go home with a medal and feel a celebration of what they’ve learned through the skating season.” Other skating clubs in our area, including Stettler, Morrin, and Drumheller have had these types of events this season and now Hanna is becoming part of the circuit.
Hoar notes that a good number of kids participate in the fun skates. “50 to 6o and some places like Innisfail and Olds have larger events. We are expecting maybe 50 or 60 kids.”
Stop by and check out the skating on Saturday, February 28th, at the Hanna Arena. There are sessions throughout the day starting at 9:15 AM and going until 3:45 PM. All the details can be found at the Hanna Figure Skating Club’s website.
