Our Drumheller Dragons were looking to get a couple of wins over the weekend to keep pace in the AJHL South Division and try to reel in the Canmore Eagles, who are in first place.
The team was also looking for a bit of payback on Friday night as they travelled to Lloydminster to face the Bobcats. The last time the two teams met, on February 13th, Lloydminster would win by a 3-1 margin, scoring three times on the powerplay. Drumheller was hoping for a better result, but it didn’t start well. Lloydminster would get on the board first with Gus El-Tahhan scoring at 6:16. The Dragons would even things up 1-1 with 6:41 left in the first period with Allen Sherpa scoring his 8th of the season, from Bradley Gallo and Jase Johnstone. The Bobcats would regain the lead with 3:11 remaining in the period with a goal by Kael Screpnek and the game would be 2-1 Lloydminster after one period. The Bobcats had not lost after leading in the first period this season, so the Dragons wanted to change that.
Early in the second, the Dragons would again draw even with Sullivan Humeniuk scoring from the point (6), assisted by Jacob Goudreau. Drumheller would take their first lead of the game at 4:10 with Nathan Ivey scoring his 6th of the year, from Nick McLennan and Eli Johnson. Lloydminster would come back to tie the game 3-3 with 3:53 left in the second on a goal by Ethan Elefante. Only 15 seconds later, the Dragons would again take the lead with Jase Johnstone scoring his 9th of the year, from Bradley Gallo. Drumheller would lead 4-3 heading to the third period.
Lloydminster would tie the game on the powerplay early in the third period, at 1:23, with Kael Screpnek scoring his second of the game. The Dragons would regain the lead with 4:48 remaining on Jase Johnstone’s second goal of the game (10), again assisted by Bradley Gallo. The Bobcats would pull goaltender Ty Matonovich with less than two minutes remaining for the extra attacker but the Dragons would hold on for the 5-4 victory.
The team would travel to Camrose after the game to prepare for their matchup against the Kodiaks. The two teams are tied in the AJHL standings with 52 points, with the Kodiaks having one game in hand.
The game would not happen. Due to issues with the ice plant at the Encana Arena in Camrose, the game would have to be postponed. No word yet on to the date the game will be rescheduled. The next action for our Dragons is at home on Saturday night against the Whitecourt Wolverines at 7 PM.
