Our Drumheller Dragons had a rescheduled game on Thursday night.
The original game was supposed to take place on Saturday, February 21st in Camrose, but due to issues with the Encana Arena the game had to be postponed and rescheduled to Thursday, February 26th. It would end up being a key game as the two teams would be tied in the standings for second place, both having 52 points. With both teams only having seven games remaining in the regular season schedule, the winner of this “four point” game would have the upper hand.
It would end up being a great start for our Dragons as they would get on the board early. At 2:49, Dragons Captain Nick McLennan opened the scoring with his 5th of the season, from Nathan Ivey. Camrose would push back but couldn’t solve Dragons netminder Brandon Williams. Drumheller would add to their lead at 145:53 with Wyatt Yule tallying his 7th of the season, from Tristan Payne. Only 2:34 later, Yule would score his second of the game, from Kaiden Schaupmeyer, making it 3-0 Dragons. With 33 seconds left in the first period, the Kodiaks Shane Purves scored his 19th of the year to cut the deficit to 3-1 Drumheller.
In the second, Camrose came out playing stronger but it would take until 11:25 before they could score, when Deacon Drummond made it 3-2 Dragons. With 5:32 left in the second period, Wyatt Yule would score his natural hat-trick goal (9), assisted by Luca Dufour, re-establishing the two goal lead for the Dragons, 4-2. Drumheller would get a powerplay opportunity late in the second. Camrose goaltender Carter Capton would come out to play the puck and played it right on the stick of Drumheller defenseman Eli Johnson, who would make no mistake and find the empty net for his third of the season, assisted by Lauchlan Kozicky, and that would end up being a key goal.
In the third, Camrose would try to reel in the Dragons and would score with 8:43 left in the game, with Bowen Grycan scoring his 21st of the year. The Kodiaks would pull their goaltender while on the powerplay late in the period but Drumheller would hold their ground for the 5-4 victory. The Dragons are now two points up on Camrose, in second place in the division, and only five back of Canmore with two games against the Eagles before the end of the season.
The Dragons are back on home ice on Saturday, February 28th at the league leading Whitecourt Wolverines pay a visit to the Memorial Arena. Game time on Saturday night is at 7 PM.
