Your Drumheller Dragons are rolling after a big win on the road in Camrose on Thursday night.
Saturday, the league leading Whitecourt Wolverines paid their last visit to the Memorial Arena for the season. The last time the two teams met in Whitecourt, Drumheller was able to pull out the win, and were hoping for the same in front of their home crowd.
The first period was a penalty filled affair with both teams with a number of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Even with the power play opportunities for both teams neither would score and the game would remain tied 0-0 after one period.
Drumheller would open the scoring early in the second, with a power play goal by Jacob Goudreau (12) only 20 seconds into the period, assisted by Allen Sherpa and Bradley Gallo. The Wolverines would tie the game 1-1 at 6:49 with a goal by Nolan Schmidt. Just under a minute later, the Dragons would regain the lead with a point shot by Kaiden Schaupmeyer (3), from Jase Johnstone and Bradley Gallo. The Gallo would add to the lead with his 27th of the year, and 60th goal as a Dragon in the regular season, assisted by Jase Johnstone and Allen Sherpa at 10:29. Drumheller would take the 3-1 lead into the third period.
At 6:05 of the third, Whitecourt would make things interesting with Xander Schulte scoring on the power play to cut the deficit to 3-2. Only 25 seconds later, Dragons forward Wyatt Yule would score his fourth goal in two games (10), assisted by Noa Halat and Cameron Johnsen to reinstate the two goal lead, 4-2. The one who started the scoring would end it as Jacob Goudreau would score a short-handed goal, his second goal of the game (13), from Jase Johnstone for the 5-2 lead. Whitecourt, surprisingly did not pull their goaltender in the third period for the extra attacker and the Dragons would go on to win 5-2.
With the win, the Dragons are now three points ahead of the Camrose Kodiaks with a game in hand, sitting in second place in the division. Drumheller is seven points back of Canmore for first and will need some help from the Olds Grizzlys but could catch them as the Dragons have two more games against Canmore before the end of the year.
Drumheller hits the road for their second last road game of the season on Friday night as they travel to Devon to face the Xtreme before coming home on Saturday to battle the Eagles. Both Friday and Saturday nights games are at 7 PM. We will have Friday’s game on the Home of the Dragons, New Country 92.5 starting at 6:45 with the Fountain Tire Drumheller Pregame Show.
