A number of students at DVSS are working on a marketing project as part of their business class.
The project they are working on is an advertising postcard that is to be sent out to homes in and around Drumheller. Hailey Palmquist, one of the students involved shares the details on the project. “In the past, and again this year, we’re doing our postcard fundraiser for each of our own businesses, to start them up for ourselves. We create postcards and ship them out to homes in and around the valley, see if local businesses want a spot on them, and we make all of the stuff (involved in the postcards).”
The project provides an opportunity for the students to market their product to local businesses and is a bit scary according to Mackenzie Henry, also in the class. “For a lot of us, it is our first time doing something like this. It is quite scary to have to reach out to these businesses and ask if they want to do this, but it is quite cool to be learning all about this stuff.”

It is a fundraising project but Henry also understands the value in the educational side of the project. “I am hoping to learn how to start your own business, for a potential career opportunity. It is great to learn about being independent and learning how to keep yourself afloat.”
According to Palmquist they have learned some marketing tactics with support from Travel Drumheller. “We had entrepreneurs from Travel Drumheller come and they had told us about ‘scrappy marketing’. Essentially, it how to start businesses with little to no funds. To start up a business, we could do a ‘flash mob’ in the cafeteria, little things to start up little businesses goes a long way.”
They continue to reach out to local businesses to fill up their postcards. The postcards will be out later this spring.
