Our Drumheller Dragons wrapped up their road portion of their regular season on Tuesday night as they travelled to Canmore to face the Eagles. The Eagles clinched 1st place last week when the Dragons dropped their game against the Devon Xtreme. Drumheller wanted to continue their winning ways to clinch second in the AJHL South Division.
Although the Eagles were not essentially playing for anything, you wouldn’t have known as the game would be very contentious. Both goaltenders would be the showcase of the game at Alex Scheiwiller for the Eagles, and Sean Cootes for the Dragons would keep the game scoreless through two periods.
The Dragons would open the scoring with only 3:30 left in the third period as Brayden Ryan-MacKay scored his 6th of the season, from Bradley Gallo and Sullivan Humeniuk. The Dragons would take a penalty with three minutes left in the game, giving the Eagles a great opportunity to tie the game. Drumheller would kill the penalty but Sean Cootes was trying to clear the puck down the ice, it would be intercepted by the Eagles and would end up costing the Dragons. Canmore would tie the game with 37 seconds left in the game with a goal by Cohen Daoust, sending the game to overtime. Drumheller would score the winner when Tristan Payne (8) scored with 3:22 left in overtime, unassisted, giving the Dragons with the win.
With the victory, the Dragons now have 61 points. The Camrose Kodiaks can tie the Dragons in points, if Drumheller loses on Friday night against the Calgary Canucks and they beat the Dragons on Sunday afternoon, but it will make no difference as the Dragons have more regulation wins, essentially giving Drumheller second place in the division. This means the Dragons will have home ice advantage against the Kodiaks in the first round of the playoffs.
The Dragons have two games remaining in their schedule and they are both at the Memorial Arena. Friday night, the Calgary Canucks visit the Dragons at 7 PM, then the final regular season game in the league will be on Sunday as the Camrose Kodiaks come to town for a 2 PM matchup. Tickets for both games are available online at tickets.drumhellerdragons.ca, or you can buy them at the door.
