Our Drumheller Dragons hit the road on Tuesday night for game three of their first round series against the Camrose Kodiaks. The Kodiaks led the series 2-0 and the Dragons desperately needed an answer back.
The Kodiaks would open the scoring midway through the first period with Lucas Magowan scoring at 12:58, putting the Dragons in an early hole. Drumheller would have their chances in the first but the period would end with our Dragons down 1-0.
The Dragons got fired up for the second period. Drumheller would get on the board when captain Nick McLennan scored at 4:28, assisted by Lauchlan Kozicky. The Dragons would take the lead only 23 seconds later when Allen Sherpa fired one from the left point that snuck in the bottom left corner of the net, assisted by Nathan Ivey and Cameron Johnsen. This would be the first lead the Dragons have had in the post season stemming back to last year when the Dragons played the Canucks in the AJHL South Final, just over 384 minutes. At 7:05, Camrose would tie the game on the powerplay with Tucker Tullikopf scoring his first of the playoffs. Drumheller would regain the lead with 5:02 left in the second, with Jase Johnstone scoring from Jensen Marsh and Bradley Gallo. With 1:25 left in the period, Dragons forward Jacob Goudreau scored his second of the post season, on the powerplay, assisted by Jase Johnstone and Tristan Payne to give the Dragons a 4-2 lead after two periods. At the end of the period there was quite a dust up in front of the Camrose net with both teams having three players involved. Carter Capton, goaltender for the Kodiaks would not return for the third period.
In the third, Camrose cut the deficit to 4-3 with Tavish Beagle scoring his third of the playoffs on the powerplay at 1:38. Only 13 seconds later, Drumheller reinstated their two goal lead with Nathan Ivey scoring his first of the playoffs, from Hayden Schollar and Eli Johnson. Camrose capitalized again on the powerplay with Tucker Tullikopf scoring his second of the game, making it 5-4 Dragons. Camrose would pull their goaltender with just over a minute left in the game. Drumheller would score into the empty net with 31 seconds left as Lachlan Kozicky scored his first of the post season, securing the 6-4 win.
