Just like in round one, our Drumheller Dragons find themselves behind the eight ball after the first two games of the AJHL South Division Final against the Canmore Eagles.
The series started in Canmore on Friday night and the Eagles came ready. Will Lutic opened the scoring 3:28 in giving Canmore the 1-0 lead. The Eagles would add another with 2:15 left in the first with Cohen Daoust scoring his second of the playoffs. Then, only 55 seconds later, Ryder Dembo would increase the Eagles lead to 3-0.
Drumheller would mount a comeback early in the second when Nick McLennan scored his second of the post-season, assisted by Cameron Johnsen and Allen Sherpa at 1:06. Then at 7:47, Allen Sherpa would score his second of the playoffs, from Cameron Johnsen and Nick McLennan, to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Early in the third, Canmore would add to their lead with Bryson Insinger scoring at 5:46, making it 4-2 Eagles. Drumheller would inch closer when Allen Sherpa fired in his third of the playoffs, second of the game, from Lauchlan Kozicky and Rowan McDonald, on the power play, making it 4-3 Canmore. Then, again on the power play, Drumheller would draw even with Jensen Marsh scoring his second of the post-season, from Tristan Payne and Bradley Gallo. The game would need overtime and 55 seconds in Aidan Tkachuk would score the game winning goal for the Eagles, winning 5-4.
Game two on Saturday night would have a similar start for both the Dragons and the Eagles. Canmore would get on the board first with Ryder Dembo scoring his fourth of the playoffs at 4:09. A minute-forty later, Canmore would increase their lead with Hudson Landmark scoring his third of the playoffs, making it 2-0 Eagles. Just under two minutes later, Canmore would add another with Easton Milne scoring his third of the playoffs. That would be the end of the night for Dragons goaltender Sean Cootes as they would switch things up by bringing in Brandon Williams.
Canmore would add one more on the power play in the second period with Hudson Landmark scoring his second of the game (4) at 3:25, making it 4-0. The Dragons would have their chances to get back in the game but could not solve Eagles goaltender Andrew Sheiwiller.
Drumheller would fall 4-0 and now trail in the series 2-0. The Dragons will hope that home ice will doe them well as the series shifts to Drumheller for games 3 and 4, Tuesday and Wednesday night. Tickets for both games are available online at tickets.drumhellerdragons.ca.
