Residents around the Drumheller Valley had to head to the polls for a provincial by-election on Monday, June 23rd.
Due to the resignation of Nathan Cooper earlier this spring, a by-election was called for the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills constituency. The constituency borders the Town of the Drumheller to the west and south. There were four people that were vying for the seat. In alphabetical order, Cam Davies representing the Republican Party of Alberta, Tara Sawyer from the United Conservative Party, Bev Toews with Alberta’s NDP, and Bill Tufts representing the Wildrose Loyalist Coalition.
Polls were open throughout the constituency yesterday between 9 AM and 8 PM. The unofficial election results are below:

Tara Sawyer UCP – 9,363
Bev Toews NDP – 3,061
Bill Tufts WLC – 189
Total votes cast in the by-election were 15,318. That represented about 39.9 percent of the eligible voters in the constituency. The UCP won 61.1 percent of the vote. This is down from the last election where the UCP won 75.3 percent of the vote.
In the other two by-elections held in the province on Monday, former Mayor of Calgary and the leader of the Alberta NDP, Naheed Nenshi was elected in the riding of Edmonton-Strathcona, the former riding for former NDP leader Rachel Notley. Also in Edmonton, the Alberta NDP won in Edmonton-Ellerslie with Gurtej Singh Brar winning by about a 1,000 vote margin.
