Last Saturday, June 21, was recognized across Canada as National Indigenous Peoples Day as part of Indigenous History Month.
In Drumheller, a ceremony and dance was held on Saturday, June 21st. It was to be held at the new tipi installation behind the Badlands Community Facility but according to Lynn Fabrick, organizer of the event, Mother Nature had different plans. “We were originally planning to do the celebration at our tipi site, behind the BCF. The BCF so generously donated a space in the field house for us.”
Even with the tough weather conditions, a good number ended up attending the event in the BCF. “We had about 40 guests. We had dancers, drummers, and it actually turned out to be a special event.”
In years’ past, Fabrick and her group of volunteers would have been busy preparing for the Dancing With The Dinosaurs Powwow, that was typically part of the July 1st celebrations in Drumheller. This year they will be having their own two day event. “We are having our Dancing With The Dinosaurs Powwow on the August Long Weekend, on August 2nd and 3rd. We have it as a stand alone event, it’s not associated with any other event. Canada Day was so busy with everyone trying to take all the things in, we thought this would be an opportunity to join us for the whole event.”
