Hard to believe the Drumheller Valley without the Canadian Badlands Passion Play.
The iconic show has been part of the Drumheller tapestry for 30 years and they are ready to open their 30th season later on tonight. With an annual show that has been around for three decades, it is important to keep it fresh and different every year. According to Alyssa Neudorf, Artistic Director for the Badlands Amphitheatre, the perspective of the story has changed from years past. “This year the script is internally referred to as the ‘outsider script’. We highlight Mary Magdalene, Judas, and Matthew. Matthew is a our main narrator but we highlight stories of Mary Magdalene and Judas as well. You will see additional scenes this year highlighting Judas’ character, which I’ve really enjoyed and really enjoyed seeing the vulnerability in all three of those characters come across.”
The continuity of performers continues this year, as many return to the show year after year admits Neudorf. “We have a number of returning cast members, who have been involved for a number of years, from Drumheller, from around Alberta. Norma is our longest standing actor, this is her 26th year in the Passion Play.”
Many may not have had the chance to experience the Badlands Passion Play before and Neudorf notes that it is unforgettable. “It’s the spectacle. Just seeing the story told on this stage. It doesn’t matter what background you are from, it is such an epic story being told on this beautiful landscape. It is such a big stage, utilizing all the hills around it, and having all the animals coming in, it is such a big spectacle. The Big Epic Story.”
As mentioned earlier, changes happen yearly with the show and Neudorf shares that there are some new actors in new roles for this year. “Our two leads are new this year. Nathan Schmidt, who has played Jesus in the past, is returning in the role of Matthew, our lead narrator. Connor Suart is debuting as Jesus this year.”
Shows are Friday, Saturday and Sunday from July 4th to July 20th. For ticket information, visit the Badlands Amphitheatre website.
