Many in our community were upset and disappointed when the decision came down to remove the Drumheller Curling Club, none more than the members of the Curling Club itself.
Late last year, the members of the Drumheller Curling Club were looking for a way to memorialize the Curling Club and decided what would be most appropriate would be a dinosaur statue as a curler.
The organization worked with DinoArts and the Town of Drumheller to start up the project and finalize the location of the new statue. According to the Drumheller Curling Club President, Debra Walker, it is a perfect fit. “In determining what would be a fit, the club came up with “Curly” to fit in with the Dinosaur motif of the community. Two leads of the Executive, Larry Needham and Leonard Price, worked with Frank Hadfield and his team at Dinosaur Valley Studios, to bring “Curly” to fruition. Larry and Len worked with Image Crafters for the sign, and the Town of Drumheller for his location and permanent home.” “Curly” was mounted on Monday at the former site of the Drumheller Curling Club.
Walker and the Curling Club, which is in the process of dissolution, hopes this will show how important curling was to the Drumheller Valley. “May it’s legacy inspire ongoing support of a sport which teaches that precision, patience, and teamwork can move even the heaviest stones. We thank all involved in bring ‘Curly’ to life.”
