During the Drumheller Town Council meeting on Monday, September 8th, a Request For Decision was put forward by administration to continue winter maintenance for certain areas of the Midland Provincial Park, specifically McMullen Island pathway, throughout the winter months by Town of Drumheller Public Works.
In addition, Town Administration has also suggested that they could maintain the parking area of the Midland Mine site along Highway 838 throughout the winter, to keep the area open to the public in the off season.
Through the discussion during the meeting, Council agreed that there would be benefits to having that area remain open throughout the year as many people use the area after it closes for the season. Unfortunately, once the area closes, it closes parking for those who may walk in the area, leaving vehicles to park in the intersection by the gate, or along Highway 838, which can be a safety concern for those who travel the highway.
Council approved the continuation of winter maintenance for McMullen Island for the 2025-26 season as well as authorized the expansion of services to include the Midland Mine lower parking area (adjacent to Highway 838). The Badlands Trail Society will also be involved as they have offered to maintain the trail and washroom facilities.
Finally, Council also directed Administration to reach out to Alberta Forestry and Parks to advocate for the Province to assume year-round maintenance responsibilities for Midland Provincial Park and the Midland Mine lower parking area.
