If you drive by any of our local schools, all seems to be pretty quiet.
With the teachers on job action as of Monday (October 6th) morning, no kids are around the schools and the parking lots are nearly empty. A few local teachers attended demonstrations over the weekend in Edmonton at the Legislature. Over 20,000 were on hand to demonstrate in regards to the job action by the Alberta Teachers’ Association against the Government of Alberta.
There are some 51,000 members on strike. The labour action impacts more than 700,000 students across 2,500 public, separate, and francophone schools across the province, including all in our area.
The schools are closed to students yet support staff are still working. Visiting the local Drumheller schools on Monday morning, there were no demonstrations as of yet. Both sides are communicating with what they call “exploratory discussions” as of Friday but no official negotiations are scheduled as of Monday morning.
