Our Drumheller Dragons took to the road for a couple of games over the weekend in Northern Alberta.
It would all start on Friday night in Whitecourt where the Dragons would face the top team in the AJHL, the Wolverines. The Dragons would open the scoring on a penalty shot by Lauchlan Kozicky (6), 4:14 into the first, taking the 1-0 lead. Whitecourt would answer with 7:28 remaining in the period, with a goal by Wyatt Ball. Then, with 4:59 remaining, Jalen Bianchet would give the Wolverines the 2-1 lead heading into the second period.
Drumheller would tie the game with a power play goal by Jacob Goudreau (3) at 6:55 in the second. The Wolverines would regain the lead just under five minutes later with a goal bay Cole Barrett. The Dragons would again tie the game 3-3 with Wyatt Yule scoring his third of the year at 12:07. Whitecourt would again take the lead with 4:48 left in the period, on a goal by Kyle Tucker on the man advantage. Drumheller would capitalize on the power play with 3:23 left, as Bradley Gallo scores his 16th on the season. The game would head to the third period all tied 4-4,
The only goal scored in the third would be by Whitecourt, midway through the period, bay Braden Nienaber. Drumheller would pull goaltender William Lubimov but would only have about 25 seconds total with the extra attacker. The Dragons would be unable to tie the game and would fall 5-4.
The team hoped to bounce back on Saturday in Drayton Valley. The last time the two teams met in Drumheller, the Dragons would come up short and did not want that to happen again. Drumheller would cash in on their first power play chance with Bradley Gallo scoring his second goal on the road trip (17), from Tristan Payne, at 3:44. The Dragons would add to their lead with 14 seconds left in the period when Jackson DeGraves (6) scores from Allen Sherpa and Kaiden Schaupmeyer, giving Drumheller the 2-0 lead after one period.
A pretty even second period with shots in favour of the Dragons 12-9 but no goals tallied for either team.
In the third, Dragons captain Nick McLennan, who has been on the IR for the past few weeks, scored his second of the year, from Jacob Goudreau at 2:29, increasing the Dragons lead to 3-0. Then, with 8:45 remaining in the third, Jase Johnstone scored his first since coming back to the Dragons this season, from Nick McLennan, making it 4-0 Drumheller. Just over a minute later, Drayton Valley would get on the board with Lukas Miller scoring, ending the shut out bid by Dragons netminder Sean Cootes.
With the win, that keeps the Dragons two points up on Canmore for third in the division, only three points back of Camrose for the lead. Drumheller will look to reel the Kodiaks in on Tuesday night as the Dragons host the Grande Prairie Storm. Game time on Tuesday is at 7:00 PM.
