Earlier in December, Elections Alberta had approved a petition for Alberta independence, put forth by Mitch Sylvestre and the Stay Free Alberta group.
As of January 3rd, the group is allowed to collect signatures for those looking for Alberta to become an independent state. One of the events in our area took place in Beiseker on Thursday, January 8th, beginning at 7 PM at the Beiseker Community Hall.
The streets of Beiseker were filled with vehicles of those looking to sign the petition and the hall was filled with supporters from throughout the region.
Organizers had said that they had events the nights before in both Didsbury and Water Valley with over 600 people attending Didsbury and over 400 in Water Valley.
The estimated number of people that attended the event in Beiseker were believed to be over 600 as well. The petition needs 177,000 valid signatures, which is 10 percent of the eligible voters from the previous Alberta provincial election. In addition to signing of the petition, a couple of speakers presented on the reasons why Alberta should leave Canada.
There are no other events currently scheduled in the Drumheller, Hanna, and Three Hills region as of yet but there may be more. The petition needs to be completed by May 2, 2026 to move forward.
