The CFIA is putting a pause on proposed amendments to the traceability portion of the health of animals regulations.
The amendments were expected to tighten requirements for cattle and other livestock, but because of confusion and concerns raised in recent weeks, the agency isn’t moving forward with publishing the new requirements, which is required before they become law.
Canada’s beef producers were demanding more consultation on the amendments, and there were producer concerns about the added cost and paperwork required. Alberta’s ag minister, RJ Sigurdson issued a letter recently urging the CFIA to slow down and engage more directly with the industry. In a social media post following the decision, Sigurdson says concerns have been heard loud and clear.
In a statement, the CCA said it was pleased with the pause.
