The Town of Drumheller is advising residents of significant leaks outside of the Town’s municipal water system on a regional water feedline that may cause temporary water discolouration and minor pressure fluctuations in some areas of the Valley for the next several days.
The Aqua 7 Regional Water Commission is addressing the issue, which has caused unusual flow patterns in connected systems. These shifts can disturb harmless, naturally occurring minerals, mainly manganese, that normally settle in water pipes, briefly causing brown or yellow coloured water.
The Town’s utility team is actively monitoring water flows and quality, adjusting operations where possible to minimize disturbances. Crews may also conduct targeted hydrant flushing in certain areas to help clear affected watermains.
Temporary shutdowns and restarts of the system can change the direction and speed of water flow, stirring up these minerals. While residents may notice short-term discolouration, the minerals are harmless and the water remains safe to use. The colour should clear as the system stabilizes and pipes are flushed.
Discolouration caused by manganese is considered an aesthetic issue and does not pose a health risk. If residents notice discolouration, they can:
- Avoid using hot water and run a cold water tap for 10-15 minutes until water clears.
- If laundry becomes stained during a discolouration event, do not use chlorine bleach as it can worsen manganese.
- Report concerns on the Town’s app, SeeClickFix. If after hours, call the Town’s on-call team directly at 403-823-2512.
Further details on these facts can be found on the Town website .
