Spring has sprung essentially so spring sports in Drumheller are preparing for their upcoming season, including the Drumheller Minor Soccer Association.
Registration is coming soon for kids soccer in the Valley according to Brad LeDrew from Drumheller Soccer. “People can go to Drumheller Minor Soccer on Facebook and you will see our registration link. Registration does close on Thursday March 26th, we need all the numbers in. Last year, we had about 140 kids registered for soccer in the valley. It is one of the most participated sports, outdoors, for kids.”
With the great numbers, LeDrew advises that they offer a new session for younger kids. “We’ve added a new age group this year, due to demand, which is ‘Parent and Tot’. A little half our practice session out on the field with a parent. Last year, our grass roots was really strong, that’s your four year old (kids), and your parent and tot is basically two and three-year-olds. We go all the way up to U16 (16 and under).”
With a large amount of kids, 140, it takes a dedicated team so things move smoothly through the year and LeDrew notes they have some dedicated volunteers “We have amazing volunteer coaches from Mexico, from Ukraine, from Canada. It is a house league but also we have competitive travel teams. Last year, our U9 team went all the way (to the championship). This year we are hoping to have a U9, a U11, and possibly a U13 team for provincial travel. We have competitive soccer for the travel team and we have competitive house leagues.”
As for volunteers for the upcoming season, LeDrew notes that there is always a need. “We can always use more.”. They are also hoping to re-sod the soccer fields that are adjacent to Bosch Truck Centre and are hoping for corporate sponsorship to help with the project.
