Our Drumheller Dragons hosted the Camrose Kodiaks for games one and two on the weekend and did not get the results they were hoping for.
Both games would be defensive battles as only five goals were scored between the two teams over the weekend. Friday night, the Kodiaks came prepared and our Dragons struggled to get any sustained pressure. The first goal scored by Camrose was from their fourth line with Tavish Beagle opening the scoring at 11:18 of the first on a deflection at the side of the net.
Early in the second, Camrose would add to their lead as Tavish Beagle would score his second of the game at 3:16 of the period.
The Dragons would get a great opportunity to get back in the game with an extended five on three powerplay late in the third period. Drumheller would get on the board with 2:27 remaining as Jacob Goudreau would score, unassisted, to cut the deficit to 2-1. Drumheller would not be able to get the equalizer, dropping game one by a final score of 2-1.
Game two on Saturday would again be a battle of goaltenders. Carter Capton of the Kodiaks was on his game again on Saturday. Sean Cootes for the Dragons was also in fine form.
The only goal would come from Liam Payne 23 seconds into the second period, giving the Kodiaks the 1-0 lead.
Late in the third, Drumheller, searching for the equalizer, would pull goaltender Sean Cootes and Camrose would seal the deal with Liam Payne scoring into the empty net, giving Camrose the 2-0 win and a 2-0 series lead.
Game three is on Tuesday night in Camrose. All of the action can be heard on the home of the Dragons, New Country 92.5, with Jason Blanke and Trevor Poff. The Fountain Tire Drumheller pregame show begins at 6:45 PM.
