As we know hockey seems to be the lifeblood in rural Alberta throughout the winter. Morrin School has noticed that too and that is why they introduced a hockey program in the school a few years ago.
This year they are expanding the program to include younger ages. Vice Principal Kristy Norman shares what changes are in store for the school’s hockey program. “We have always had the hockey program in junior/senior high but now we have hired on Tyson Lowen. Because he is an elite coach, we decided that we would expand it and go into elementary for anybody that was interested.”
It is great to help maintain and expand the student population of Morrin School. The program is eligible to students already attending Morrin and hope that more kids may come to attend school in Morrin according to Norman. “One of the things is sustainability in Morrin and the draw by offering different programming than another school.”
The program will be available to all levels of hockey players from first year players to those with experience. “It is definitely open to everybody,” confirms Norman. “The only thing that we ask is that the kids are able to put on their equipment. Tying skates, we can help with.”
The program will run from September through March and offers an estimated 40 off-ice training sessions, and 80 on-ice training sessions for kids in Grades 1 through 6. For the Junior and Senior High Program, it runs from September through January and offers 40 off-ice and 40 on-ice training sessions. There may be more on-ice sessions available depending on scheduling and program availability.
The cost of the program is $500 for the year. Norman shares that they hope those interested register as soon as possible. “Our current Morrin School students, they have until the end of the month to put in their one hundred dollar deposit, so we have numbers and see how many new students we can put in the program. Anybody, right now, can put in their application right now.”
Transportation is possibly available from Drumheller as there is currently a bus that travels from the valley. If you reside outside of the Rumsey, Morrin, Munson, or Drumheller area, your child is able to register but parents must provide the transportation to and from Morrin. For more information and to register, visit Morrin School’s website or Facebook page.
