The Rotary Club of Drumheller has always been a strong supporter of other important institutions within the Drumheller Valley and this was shown again earlier this month.
The Rotary Club made a donation to Drumheller Community Learning to the tune of $10,000. Rotary President Jay Garbutt shares that after their successful membership drive, the group refocused on supporting the community through Rotary Club International’s key pillars. “Rotary International has about nine pillars, or areas of focus. We had the club do an exercise on focusing on three or four areas we want to be about this year. Literacy and basic education is one of those pillars, so we have had a relationship with Drumheller Community Learning. We went to them to ask how we could help. They pointed out that their ‘Homework Help’ program was at capacity, that they had a waiting list for students needing support and the resources were not there to meet that need. We were very happy to step in and help with some funds this year.”
The only way that the Rotary Club can help the community is by continued support through their fundraising events, such as the Rotary Radio Auction or the White Elephant Sale events that are held on a semi-annual basis. Garbutt and the club appreciate the community support as always. “A total team effort and a total community effort. The community stands by us when we do the fundraising events we do, to do amazing things with that money, just like this.” Being part of Rotary International, the group is also supporting the development of a medical clinic in an underserved community in Mexico. Within Drumheller, the club is also looking to support seniors, the development of a few projects, including one within the BCF.
Rotary did have a very successful membership drive but Garbutt admits that there is always room for more members. “The job of every Rotarian is to go and see if we can broaden our impact in the community by growing our membership. We are never closed to membership, we are always looking for people who are looking to have an impact in their community, looking to work with a bunch of like-minded people who really want to try to make the world, and our little piece of it, a better place.”
