The Province of Alberta announced on Wednesday that they plan to invest an additional $28 million to protect families, communities, and our economy from future floods and drought.
Part of that funding is $25 million for 12 projects through the Drought and Flood Protection Program. The Town of Drumheller has one of those 12 projects.
The Town of Drumheller has essentially completed most of the flood mitigation project but the additional funding provided by the Province of Alberta will allow the Town to purchase “Tiger Dams” and other flood mitigation equipment for temporary use to provide additional protection during a flood emergency.
“Tiger Dams” are a product that essentially replaces sand bags with a system of elongated flexible tubes which maybe quickly stacked, joined end to end and filled with water. The pyramid shaped structure forms a barrier to protect buildings, resort properties and any other structures prior to the onset
of a flood. The tubes can be filled with a 2 inch pump, a fire hydrant (fastest) or a garden hose. The tubes are capable of being stacked up to a maximum of 32 feet high and linked together seamlessly for miles. They can be virtually any length and take any shape. Each 18″ Tiger Dam™ tube weighs 50 lbs dry and 6300 lbs when filled with water, according to US Flood Control Corp, the designers of “Tiger Dams”
The grant amount for the additional flood mitigation protection is $337,000 and is approved by the Province for April 2026. These “Tiger Dams” and subsoil fill will provide protection in six gaps where the use of permanent earthen berms is not feasible.
