Unfortunate news out of the hamlet of Torrington yesterday as a gathering place for local seniors went up in flames.
According to information shared by Kneehill County, Torrington Fire was dispatched to a fire to a structure along Centre Street in Torrington at 12:45 PM. Later the building was identified as the Silver Willows Seniors Centre.
The fire was still active at 2:45 PM with numerous fire crews on scene to try to battle the fire in the windy conditions, as well as protect the adjacent buildings.
By 5:00 PM, firefighters were still on scene addressing hot spots. They did ask that residents avoid the area to give local firefighters space. Good news is that no injuries were reported due to the fire and the cause is still under investigation. Fire crews from Torrington, Trochu, and Linden attended the scene, along with RCMP and EMS. Fortunately the former Torrington General Store was able to be saved.
